In Shuang Li’s “Fearless Waterscapes,” she knows that great paintings with interesting edges need a dress rehearsal. Audition your edges by doing a value study.
Why: Not only will you have a plan for light and darks, but you’ll know where in your painting you’ll want to work wet into wet for soft edges and where you’ll want it dryer. You’ll get a sense of how long you need to wait until you add your marks. It’s a safe place to practice and take out the guesswork of all the kind of edges you want to make in your finished piece.
